The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation and CodeCrew, a non-profit organization focused on teaching digital skills to youth, together are launching 'Grizzlies Code Camp' from June 8 - July 17 at the Grizzlies Digital Lab at the Lester Community Center (317 Tillman Street, Memphis 38112), the team announced today.
During the summer camp, students will learn to build complex mobile applications using M.I.T.’s AppInventor development platform. The event is open to boys and girls entering grades 7-9 and registration is available via the following link: http://grizzcodecamp.eventbrite.com. There is no tuition cost for Grizzlies Code Camp, but a $15 registration fee is required.
The summer coding camp is open to beginners; fall and winter camps are in development for intermediate and advanced levels. Every student enrolled in the camp will be assigned a mentor: an adult with expertise in technology and computer sciences who will help ensure that students stay actively engaged with the program and the content.
There are so many exciting career paths available in digital technologies – coding, game design, software design – we want to make sure young people in Memphis have the skills to take advantage of those opportunities but also, relationships with people in the field to help guide and inspire them.
-- Diane Terrell, Executive Director of the Grizzlies Foundation
Grizzlies Code Camp is the second in a series of events hosted by CodeCrew teaching youth to code in Memphis. The first event was a one-day kickoff workshop where children were introduced to mobile app development that took place on May 23, 2015 at the Grizzlies Digital Lab at the Lester Community Center. After the Grizzlies Summer Camp, CodeCrew will host its third event, a two-day hackathon where students can showcase the skills they learned during the camp and compete for prizes.
We are excited to have the support of the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation to bring this six-week, in-depth learning experience to our city’s youth. We cannot wait to see what kinds of mobile apps these burgeoning young minds will produce this summer.
